Case Studies Session 2023-24
Case Study 1: From Cake Cutting to Birthday Celebration
Introduction
The journey of creating inclusive celebrations in our school began on Teachers’ Day, with a cake cutting event that brought together approximately 30 to 40 attendees. This event served as a catalyst for a larger discussion about inclusivity and the unique needs of our children.
The Cake Cutting Event
During the Teachers’ Day celebration, the atmosphere was filled with joy, but it soon turned chaotic as the children approached the cake with the fervor of wild cats eyeing a bowl of fish. This moment highlighted the need for careful planning in future events, particularly those involving our diverse group of special needs children.
Transition to Birthday Celebrations
Recognizing the importance of creating a celebratory atmosphere, we decided to host birthday celebrations for our students. For the first event, we sought permission to invite families, believing their involvement would enhance the experience.
The Celebration Experience
The birthday celebration commenced with excitement, but the atmosphere shifted as one concerned family observed the dynamics of the diverse group. Their unease stemmed from their inability to fully accept the inclusion of children with special needs in the same space as their child.
As the event progressed, the family’s discomfort became evident. By the end of the evening, the mother made the difficult decision to withdraw her child from our school, citing our commitment to inclusivity as a factor in her choice.
Conclusion
This experience underscored the challenges of promoting inclusivity in a setting that serves children with diverse needs. It highlighted the importance of fostering understanding and acceptance among families, as well as the necessity of clear communication about our mission. Moving forward, we are committed to creating an environment where all families feel welcome and valued, ensuring that our celebrations truly reflect the diversity of our community.
